Gourmet Delights on the Menu at Abersoch: (08/04/04)
Visitors and locals on the Llyn peninsula will be in for a culinary treat on the weekend after Easter. The annual Abersoch Gourmet Weekend is taking place on April 16th & 17th, and this year it's all being held under one roof. There will be demonstrations, tastings and a food producers' market all in a large marquee next to the Riverside Hotel.

Organiser Jane Richardson said she is really excited about this year's event: "We have a fantastic programme of demonstrations. Welsh celebrity chefs Dai Davies and Mel Thomas will be preparing some amazing dishes using ingredients from the Llyn peninsula. And we've also got our largest number of exhibitors ever". Among those exhibiting at the event are North Wales Buffalo, Anglesey Quail, Bwydlyn, Glasfryn, Aran Organic Lamb, Deri Mon Smokery and Llyn Seafoods.

The 2003 Gourmet Weekend attracted over 1,000 people but the organisers hope even more people will attend this year because it co-incides with the Easter holiday. Local children have already been getting in on the act. Chef Mel Thomas went into the primary schools at Mynytho, Sarn Bach and Abersoch before the end of term to talk to the youngsters about local foods. He cooked up some dishes for them and then asked them to draw posters showing the produce of the Llyn. Jane said the results have been really good: "We have had a great response to the poster competition. All the entries will be up in Abersoch Village Hall over Easter and the winners will be decided in time for the Gourmet weekend."

An evening's special entertainment is also being planned as part of the event this year. At 7:30pm on Friday 16th April there will be a hog roast and dance for all the family in the marquee. The music is being provided by Band Arall.

Entrance to the Gourmet Weekend is £1 for adults and 50p for children. A raffle will be held at the event to raise money for the RNLI. For more info contact the tourist office: 01758 712929

-"My Doom" Virus - Are You Protected: (02/02/04)
Along with many other websites, we are being bombarded with e-mails containing the "My Doom" virus - the virus ramdomly sends out e-mails to addresses contained on an infected machine. The fact that we are receiving so many (over 1000 this weekend) means that some people who have visited our site and contacted us over the last couple of years are infected. If you have no up to date anti-virus software on your PC and you are reading this - you are putting in jeopardy the effective future use of the internet and costing many companies a great deal of wasted time and money. A leading technology site stated this weekend "The mass-mailing MyDoom virus has become the fastest spreading program to date and the damage could continue for months or years. About one in every nine messages being sent through the Internet contains the virus."

Llithfaen has become the first village on the Llyn Peninsula to achieve its BT broadband trigger mark meaning that it is now very likely that its local BT exchange will be broadband enabled in the near future. This gives hope to villages such as Abersoch who have been given a tough trigger target of 300. That means 300 phone lines and their owners have to show an interest in wanting broadband. Forms are now appearing in local shops for people to register their interest by writing their phone number, name and postcode (and e mail address if they have one). If you see a form - please fill it out - or there are online forms at www.llyn.net.

Abersoch had a very busy New Year - with the shops and bars reporting excellent business. One unusual attraction was the body of a dead basking shark that was washed up on Porth Neigwl beach. The 15 feet plus plankton feeding monster drew a steady stream of visitors for several days. 2 live basking sharks were also spotted off Cilan Head - but don't worry - although they are the second largest fish in the sea, second only to the whale shark - they are harmless and gentle creatures which feed only on plankton. For more info on these creatures try visitng - www.isle-of-man.com/interests/shark

- Record Traffic Stats For Abersoch.co.uk in 2003: (11/12/03)
Its been another busy year for this website with over 3 million individual pages accessed since January 2003 - a tremendous performance for a small village website and the figures compare favourably to many publically funded and corporate websites (click here for full stats). Many thanks to all who continue to support the site and who access it regularly. Abersoch.co.uk is run on a shoestring budget - financed by the advertisers that you see on our banners and links in the various site sections. The site receives no public, council or Wales Tourist Board funding - so please mention us when you visit an accommodation or business link from this site.

- BT Set Broadband Trigger For Abersoch: (11/12/03)
British Telecom have recently set the trigger for Abersoch to become broadband enabled. The number of people that we need to become interested is 300. As we only have currently 70 or so people who have registered an interest - we would like to appeal again to anyone who has a BT phoneline in Abersoch to register an interest in obtaining broadband at www.llyn.net - or with your ISP. Remember there is absolutely no obligation at all - all you are doing is showing an interest. If you have more than one phoneline - you can register an interest for each number! The www.llyn.net site also has info on the Pwllheli wireless broadband experiment - and the triggers for other villages on the Llyn.
