Happy Mondays, Zane Lowe & Jo Whiley at Wakestock: (25/04/2008)
The latest confirmed additions to what is now a phenomenal line-up for Wakestock this year includes indie legends Happy Mondays and Radio 1 legends Jo Whiley & Zane Lowe.

Radio 1's leading lady JO WHILEY will be making the trip to sunny Wales to host the main stage. JO WHILEY has been a member of the Radio 1 team for 15 years and has built up a reputation for championing some of the hottest acts of the British music scene today, through her flagship afternoon show on Radio 1. Her legendary Live Lounge sessions have become hugely popular with listeners and artists alike and we are sure that she will go down well with the Wakestock crowds, who will appreciate that she is one of the most influential Djs around today.

She will be joined by her Radio 1 colleague and one of the hottest DJ's around, ZANE LOWE, who will be coming along with some very special guests to host his own tent. This man has been fundamental in finding and nurturing some of the finest acts of the British music scene today, through his flagship evening show on Radio 1. He is also something of an MTV veteran having appeared on the station since 1997. His most current show Gonzo on MTV Two introduces some of most exciting new acts around, some of whom will be appearing on stage with him this year.

Wakestock 2008 also sees the HAPPY MONDAYS, who rose to fame in the 80's within the Manchester rave scene, make the trip to Abersoch. They have reformed and are back and receiving critical acclaim with their album Uncle Dysfunktion. These legendary party animals will definitely get the crowds going!

These exciting announcements are just in time for tickets going on sale in the shops on Wednesday next week (30th April). This is a month earlier than usual due to the strong line-up & after selling out weeks in advance last year. Don't miss out and get them from any of the following shops: OSD, High Street, Abersoch, Fat Face, High Street, Abersoch, TTR Powerboats, Pwllheli, Snowdonia Adventure, Caernarfon , Cob Records, Bangor, Cob Records, Porthmadog.

You can also book online at www.wakestock.co.uk or over the phone on 01758 710000. You really don't want to miss out this year on what is the event of the summer for many!

Dobson and Tunnicliffe Set to Defend Title: (25/04/2008)
At the 2006 GP14 World Championship in Sligo, Ireland, Ian Dobson and Andy Tunnicliffe sailed an impressive series and mastered a range of conditions to claim victory with a race to spare. These two sailors are now set to defend their World title in August this year at South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club, Abersoch, North Wales (2-8 August); one of best sailing venues in the UK. The competition will be fierce with a number of former World and National Champions from various classes already set to sail the title away from them. Do you have what it takes? Even if you don't there will be plenty to race for. The GP14 enjoys a reputation for close tactical racing which ensures competition throughout the fleet and is still the envy of many dinghy classes. Throw in some fantastic prizes and trophies and a reknowned camaradarie off the water and you have a recipe for a fun week's sailing. www.gp14.org

An Easterly Weekend: (21/04/2008)
The last few days has seen a persistent ENE wind blowing into the bay. This wind direction tends to be a nuisance all year round due to the short frequency swell it whips up, making it very rough in the bay and also its a cold wind for much of the year. The wind was particularly strong overnight into Saturday and resulted in a large boat being sunk in the moorings.

Early Saturday Morning

The onshore winds have also caused a large amount of sand to be scoured from the Main Beach, but this normally quickly returns after a spell of the prevailing SW winds. This week we should see temperatures rise and hopefully today will be the last day of easterlies for a while.

The Search for Gwynedd's Sharks, Skates and Rays!: (16/04/2008)
An "Egg Case Hunt" will take place at Porth Neigwl next week.
On Tuesday afternoon, April 22nd, you can take part looking for the egg cases of the dogfish (a type of shark!) as well as those of skates and rays which are often washed up on the shore. Every shark, skate and ray species lay their own unique egg cases so this hunt on Porth Neigwl beach will be a chance to discover the secrets of these mysterious creatures. The event will also be a chance to discover some of the other creatures that live in the harsh conditions of the seashore habitat!.

Bryn Griffiths, Biodiversity Officer for Gwynedd Council said:
"We're eager for anyone with an interest in wildlife to come along and enjoy this special event. We'll see a wide variety of marine wildlife on Porth Neigwl's seashore, but we also hope to look closely at the egg cases that are often seen in the strandline, having been carried in by recent storms or washed up through the natural action of waves. With the variety of egg cases we come across, we hope to be able to get an idea of the types of skates and rays that are using the sea off the coast of Llyn."

Bryn added: "We hope to extend this search to other areas in Gwynedd over the course of the summer so if anyone would like to come to this event, or would like to take part in further surveys elsewhere on Gwynedd's shore, then please get in touch."

These events are part of a wider programme of events, funded by CCW, to raise awareness of locally important wildlife in Gwynedd. It is free and open to all - but children should be accompanied by an adult. Also remember to wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring your sunscreen (just in case!). They will be meeting at the beach car park in Porth Neigwl (SH284267), near the village of Llanengan, at 4pm. For more information contact Bryn Griffiths on 01286 679381 or by e-mailing: bioamrywiaeth@gwynedd.gov.uk You can also visit www.gwynedd.gov.uk/biodiversity to see other events held by the Natur Gwynedd Partnership.

GP14 World Championships In Abersoch: (15/04/2008)
August will see GP14 sailors return to South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club for their World Championship 2008.

This popular 14 foot, two man dinghy has shared a long relationship with Abersoch and it is testament to the venue's popularity that over seventy boats had already pre-booked their entry place by the beginning of April.

The last time the GP14's were in Abersoch for their World Championship was in 2003 and that year over 170 boats took part. Although it remains to be seen whether the fleet will reach the same numbers this time around, the quality of competition already looks strong with a number of former World Champions having laid down the gauntlet and at least two others rumoured to be filling in their entry forms as you read this having just taken delivery of new boats.

Add in a number of other top competitors from the UK, Ireland and GP14 fleets worldwide, including National and Grand Prix Champions, and the competition is sure to be hot, but as always the fleet racing will be close at all levels within the fleet - this being just one of the things that keeps people of all ages and abilities coming back to GP14 sailing. The other is the camaraderie off the water and Abersoch 2008 is not likely to disappoint on that score either, with a number of great social events already planned.

With its warm welcome, great beach and fabulous sailing area the GP14 World Championship 2008 being sailed from South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club, Abersoch, 2-8 August should not be missed. For more information, visit www.gp14.org.

News From Abersoch Keelboat Week Organisers: (25/03/2008)
Abersoch Keelboat Week this year will be held between the 18th and 22nd August 2008 and once again we are delighted to offer the essential requirement of good, competitive handicapped racing in the beautiful waters surrounding Tremadoc Bay.

Abersoch Keelboat Week has been enjoying increased entries in recent years, with improved standards and racing keen and well organised. We are therefore very pleased to announce that this year sees the inclusion of the North Wales IRC Area Championship which will run concurrently within the event and alongside the popular events such as the Open Welsh Sportsboat Championship and the ever popular PYS.

Following on from its very successful first year we have again included the Gentlemen's Class to accommodate those who would like to race and be involved, but who do not have the crew or the experience or even the desire to get involved in the windward/leeward dogfight. The class will be handicapped on PYS and will race a "coastal" race each day, with a ‘long’ race to be held on one of the days.

We have great news again this year in that Wombat has agreed to be a sponsor, along with Haulfryn, St Tudwals, Sun Inn, Veynol, Spar and Hafan Pwllheli. We also welcome Pannone LLP as a new sponsor on board this year,.

Along with the racing, we will be putting together a number of social activities to make sure that people don’t get bored ashore!

For the Notice of Race and Entry Form, up to the minute information and to keep in touch, visit the new Abersoch Keelboat Week website on: www.abersochkeelboatweek.org

Easter Sunday was a particularly cold feeling day with a raw N wind. Today its less windy but still cold. Roll on Spring!

Easter Weekend Weather - Update: (22/03/2008)
Its certainly a chilly Easter Holiday so far! Apart from a few bits of sleety stuff blowing in the wind, its been mostly dry here in Abersoch but there has been a very cold and strong northerly wind. We have seen some sunshine, but nothing to write home about! Most of the heavier wintry showers appear to be missing us and going down the west coast of Wales - as the photo below taken on Friday shows.

Early Good Friday Morning - Abersoch Main Beach (see daily photo favourites)

Easter Weekend Weather - Update: (19/03/2008)

Duffy No. 1 in Singles & Album Charts: (10/03/2008)
Local girl Duffy from Nefyn, who made the move to London a couple of years back after living in Abersoch for 2 years, has hit the top of the charts for both her single Mercy & now Album Rockferry. Duffy sang on a few occasions locally including the Wakestock festival back in 2003, when she sang 2nd on the main stage, having borrowed a piano from the band Wheatus, when hers broke just minutes before she was supposed to perform.
We're sure she'll have no such problems this year when she returns to play her headline set at Wakestock this year with her full band. Bands like The Streets, Groove Armada, The Hoosiers, Funeral For A Friend and many more will join her during the weekend. About half the acts have been announced so far with loads more to be released over the next few weeks. It's evident that the line-up is going to be much stronger than in previous years and along with Duffy's current success this is a key reason why tickets are selling extremely quickly. You are advised to get them soon as they are destined to sell out well in advance.
You can buy them at www.wakestock.co.uk or call 01758 710000

Storm in a Tea Cup?: (10/03/2008)
Its been windy overnight, but we have not had the severe gales that were being suggested in the forecast with winds barely gusting to force 8 in the village centre in the early hours. This mornings tide is still likely to be a very big one and we will post some photos later.

High Wind / Tide Combination on Monday: Update: (09/03/2008)
Severe gales are probable over the next 36 hours. The detail is still dificult to predict due to an uncertain track of the low pressure system that is arriving in the morning, however its now looking very likely that we will see some very strong winds overnight tonight and into Monday. We are also likely to see a very big tide on Monday morning due to the combination of high winds, low pressure and a big spring tide. The Met Office have severe weather warnings out for Wales.

Turtle Found Alive On Local Beach
: (04/01/2008)
A turtle was found washed up yesterday on Porth Ceiriad and amazingly it was still showing signs of life. 3 experts came to the beach to care for it and they thought the turtle may have either been an Olive Ridley or a Kemp Ridley and there was possibly only one other case of these types being found washed up alive in the UK. It appeared dead at first as its vitals may have shut down due to the cold temperatures, which sometimes stuns them into a coma like state.

The turtle was due to be taken to a specialist centre on the south coast of England today and as yet, there is no further news on its fate.

Other types of Turtle such as the Leatherback, have been seen in Cardigan Bay before and are said to feed on Jellyfish swarms. However this one appears to be a very rare visitor.

Abersoch Lifeboat New Years Dip 2008: (02/01/2008)
Over a thousand spectators turned out for the second Abersoch New Year's Day Dip to see at least 180 brave "dippers" rush into the cold sea to raise money for the Abersoch RNLI Lifeboat. The fancy dress theme for this year was Pantomime, the entrants were judged by King Neptune, arriving on the Lifeboat to loud cheers as he waded ashore. The costumes were magnificent; all should have been prize winners! However the judges had to make difficult decisions and the prizes were awarded to the following: Best Boy, (Ugly Sister): Thomas Turtle of Abersoch; Best Girl, (Pocahontas): Alice Ward of Prestatyn, Best Gentleman (Captain Hook): David Jackson of Bwlchtocyn, Best Lady (Mother Christmas): Carol Nichols of Warrington and Best Team (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs): the Whitehead family and friends of Prestbury. Photographs of all the entrants can be seen and downloaded from minxpix.co.uk at: http://john53.zenfolio.com/p1004699170/

The committee are grateful to local businesses and friends of the RNLI who generously supported the event, including Asda, Somerfield, The Co-Op, Harlech Foods, Gwynedd Disposables, J & C Jones (Builders) and Will and Jane Williams for use of the Beach Café. Heartfelt thanks also to the Abersoch Lifeboat crew and support team and the Coastguards, all of who gave up holiday time to ensure the event was safe. Thanks to the generosity of participants and spectators the amount raised is expected to better last year's sum of £5000.
