- National Water Speed Record: (10/10/06)
Peninsula Ribs Ltd, Pwllheli and Abersoch based, is planning to set a National water speed record by circumnavigating the Isle of Anglesey in November this year. Managing Director Ian Greenwood and navigator Arwyn Thomas, both RYA Powerboat Instructors are aiming to achieve the circumnavigation of 66 nautical miles (75.9 statute miles) in just under an hour and a half aboard Black Jack, a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) powered by a Suzuki 250hp 4 stroke engine.
There is currently no official record for the route, but records stand for round the Isle of White and round Britain amongst others. This record setting event should draw further record attempts in the future and highlight boating in North Wales, already an activity well supported in the area.
The idea was thought of earlier this year and a great deal of planning is involved along with obtaining the relevant authorisations from various bodies.
Local newspapers and BBC Wales have been contacted as has a freelance TV crew who are looking at mounting a small video camera on Black Jack to record the event as well as the whole of the Anglesey coastline, also producing a piece for a local news channel.
The exact date will be dependant on a suitable weather window, and provision has been made for everyone concerned to be available at short notice to obtain the ideal conditions.
Black Jack is usually employed in charter work covering all of North and Mid Wales, adrenalin rides off Abersoch Beach for visitors to the area during the tourist season and water activity corporate events which are proving more and more popular. Capable of carrying up to 10 passengers and two crew, the vessel has also been chartered for dive work, TV film documentaries and survey work.

- O'Shea Wakestock Nominated For UK Festival Awards: (29/09/06)
Wakestock 06 has been nominated in two categories at this year's UK Festival Awards. As well as being nominated in the Best Small Festival Category the North Wales based festival has also been nominated in the Innovation Award category alongside some of the UK's most respected and long running festivals. Wakestock earned themselves this nomination following the introduction of a massive pool gap structure on the festival site this year. A tried and tested formula in the US, Wakestock was the first event in the UK to build a huge wakeboard and wakeskate pool structure slap bang in the middle of their festival site, bringing all the action to the 20,000 people who attended the festival this year

Pat Panakos from The Projects, Orlando travelled over to North Wales to design, build and manage the project - his reputation as wakeboarding rail guru is not wrong!! The construction of a huge 3 rail, 70 metre long, 100,000 gallon structure was no mean feat - especially in the middle of a field with no running water - it was nothing short of impressive! The US DVS wakeskate team travelled over to hit the set-up and with some of the world's best wakeskaters on the team the riding was sick - Aaron Reed, Thomas Horrell, Jim Leatherman and Myles Vickers were all representing DVS, and were joined by UK DVS team member Craig McCulloch and South African skater Dieter Humpsch. What a way to introduce the pool-gap concept to the UK! All the riders couldn't wait for their chance to hit the rails. The showcase put on by the riders amazed and drew in the crowds, and the riders were loving both the fame and the fun…not many people get to ride whilst watching Feeder LIVE!

This year's Wakestock was a sell-out success bringing over 20,000 visitors to the Llyn Peninsula. The weekend saw two days of hot wakeboarding and wakeskating action, from some of the best riders in the UK and abroad with Dan Nott taking the title of Wakestock champ, and Ben Hitch and Nick Davies taking 2nd and 3rd place. This year's music line up brought some of the UK's top bands and DJs to the beautiful Wakestock including Feeder, The Automatic, The Zutons, and Carl Cox to name but a few.

So if you want to vote for Wakestock and give them a chance of winning this prestigious award please go to www.festivalawards.com - everyone who votes will be automatically entered into an amazing prize draw to win a pair of tickets to every winning festival, plus a pair of VIP tickets to the awards ceremony in London on October 19th plus a year's supply of Carling lager!

Voting started on September 25th and runs for 3 weeks so register your vote for Wakestock now by going to www.festivalawards.com.

Wakestock 2007 is taking place on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st July and is set to be the best yet do keep your eyes peeled for the "new look" website that is coming your way for all the latest information on the festival.

- This Weeks Tides: (04/09/06)
We have received a few e-mails asking about the very high spring tides later this week. 5.4m tides are expected on Friday and Saturday evening - these are very big tides but how big they actually will be will depend on the weather conditions at the time. At the moment the forecasts are suggesting high pressure over us for this period so we may well not see the spectacular heights we saw in March. These big tides generally only become a problem in this area when they are accompanied by deep areas of low pressure with an associated storm surge - or high winds from an easterly quarter.

- Major Rescue Off Pwllheli Harbour : (04/09/06)
A major rescue of 17 yachts and 60 people involving both Pwllheli RNLI Lifeboats and local Coastguards took place on Saturday. Abersoch RNLI Lifeboat was also launced and was first tasked to a yacht washed up on the Warren and then carried out a shoreline search from Llanbedrog to Pwllheli. 40 knot S - SSW winds were recorded at the relatively sheltered Abersoch weather station, with 50 knots recorded at SCYC and gusts of up to 60 knots by yachts on the water, which meant it was a rough trip home for The Abersoch RNLI Lifeboat. - Tidal Aid 2006: (31/08/06)
Tidal Aid took place last Thursday raising money for two local charities including the local primary school Ysgol Abersoch, and also the local RNLI. Although there had been a terrible run up of weather prior to the event, Thursday morning managed to bring a glimpse of sunshine to the village. Midday saw the start to the annual beach volleyball competition where 8 teams battled it out for the title of Tidal Aid champion 2006. After a strong battle in the final, the champions were team "OTT" who managed to beat last year's champions "40 and Out". The final results went as follows:
1st place - OTT
2nd place - 40 and Out
3rd place - Tractor Boys Plus One

After these places had been set there were still two prizes to battle for, the team who had put in the best effort and the team who had the best fancy dress. After a tough decision it was decided that "Young Turrets" had put in the best effort. With their tallest player reaching a grand 3 feet, and the top of the net being nowhere near in reach to any of them, they gave a tremendous battle to any team that crossed their path. And as far best fancy dress went, there was only one team who could steal the show and it had to go to "The Muppets" who had made t-shirts especially and worn hats and wigs even in the sweltering sun - especially Heidi who had worn a bright pink afro for the entire day.

The day turned into night, and the party then moved to The Harbour Hotel where DJs including Chris Weston, Jonty and Seb were mixing some awesome tracks and the crowds rocked along with The Jack Rabbits.
A special thank you to all of the local businesses that donated prizes and helped to make this year's Tidal Aid take place. In total the day managed to raise £300 for charity, which is not as much as the event had risen in the past, but still contributed a respectable £150 to each charity. A great day was had by all involved, made all the better as the sun managed to come out! Roll on Tidal Aid 2007!

- Powerboat Drama Off Abersoch: (22/08/06)
Four people had to abandon their powerboat as it caught fire and exploded just off the shore at Marchros beach yesterday evening. Coastguards, the Fire Brigade and Abersoch RNLI Inshore Lifeboat were all called to the dramatic scene where fortunately no one was injured. The powerboat was burning from bow to stern and drifted along the shore just out of range of the Fire Brigade's hoses until it came to a halt halfway to Penrhyn Du - where the flames were able to be doused. The boat was completely destroyed. www.rnliabersoch.co.uk

Tidal Aid is back on Thursday 24th August 2006 to help raise money for local charities. This year the two local charities that have been chosen are the local primary school, Ysgol Abersoch and the local RNLI. Both of them are a valuable part of the village and need your support. Tidal Aid is an opportunity for everyone to get involved and help raise money for these charities.
During the daytime there is the annual beach volleyball competition near Footprints on Abersoch main beach, where all are welcome no matter what age or level of skill you are. It's just a day of fun with prizes for both the winners, the losers and the best dressed out on the court. With almost every local shop kindly donating something to the prize fund, there are a lot of exciting prizes to be won. REMEMBER you don't have to win to get a prize. Come along and challenge the reigning champions, who MUST be beaten…they can't possibly win again!

If you would like to enter a team then pop into Jack Wills and pick up a team form. These need to be completed and returned to Jack Wills no later than 5pm on Wednesday 23rd August.

Thursday night as usual is a spectacle of music ranging from the dance beats of Chris Weston to the rock sounds of The Jack Rabbits and the hip hop grooves of DJ's Play and Bast. Get down to Abersoch Harbour Hotel next Thursday from 9pm to join the party and help support your local charities.

- Abersoch RNLI Lifeboat Saves 4: (03/08/06)
The RNLI Abersoch Lifeboat was called out last night at 7.15 pm after a 10ft inflatable dinghy was reported overdue. The dinghy was located near to St.Tudwal's Islands and the adult and 3 children on board were found to be cold but otherwise unharmed. The tiny dinghy with a 30 - 40 year old Seagull 2.5hp engine could not cope with the strong northerly wind (gusting up to force 6) and was unsuprisingly blown down wind and out to sea and as the sea got rougher, the engine was swamped. The dinghy had a small anchor on board but only a tiny anount of warp and no chain - making it useless as a safety device. There were also no flares on board and the mobile phone carried had no signal. The persons were wearing buoyancy aids - but were only wearing shorts and T shirts and it would seem that a tragedy was narrowly avoided in this case. www.rnliabersoch.co.uk

The crowd saw impressive performances from a host of bands and DJ's including The Automatic, Feeder and The Zutons. The views from the site across the bay towards Snowdonia were spectacular and the open air stage (Glastonbury's "Other Stage"), proved a great success on a cloudless evening - taking the festival to a higher level than seen in previous years and with the other tented stages, skate ramp, funfair, stalls and eateries - there was plenty to see and do. A new addition was the two tier DVS pool gap wakeboard and wake skate pool where festival goers were given a taste of what the sport is about. We'll be posting photos from the event over the coming days.

The anchor line on board was too short to be effective hence the vessel was drifting down wind. The vessel was towed to Abersoch for refuelling. There appeared to be no lifejackets on board.

- Don't Become a Statistic This Easter - Warns RNLI (13/04/06)
The Easter holiday is traditionally a busy time for RNLI volunteers as boat owners head for the coast. Over the Easter period last year, RNLI lifeboats launched 123 times and rescued 167 people. The single biggest cause of service was machinery failure -accounting for 25% of all incidents.

In the last 12 months, RNLI lifeboats in Wales have launched 219 times to vessels out of fuel or with engine failure. In many cases the upset of the callout could have been avoided if simple engine and fuel checks had been carried out before hand including:

- Run your engine, give it a visual check
- Check the oil, hydraulic fluid and fuel lines
- On outboards, check the kill cord
- Make sure the fuel tank is secured
- Don't run out of fuel * check you have enough for the voyage and a bit extra

Those who decide to go to sea are advised to tell someone where they are going and when they are expected to return. This is not only essential to those using boats but for those who decide to spend the Bank Holiday on the beach or fishing off rocks.

RNLI Divisional Sea Safety Manager, Nicola Davies says:

'Its not only checking your boat to prevent the need for rescue that is important. It is also essential to check emergency equipment that you will need should the worst happen. Wearing lifejackets and having a useable liferaft can give you and our lifeboat crews vital minutes should anything go wrong. If carrying children on board, Nicola says it is crucial to ensure they have lifejackets, which fit properly.

She adds: 'Everyone thinks that it won't happen to them but last year many had to think again.'

The RNLI recommends the following checks for safety equipment:
· Lifejackets - gas canisters for corrosion and webbing for wear
· Carry out a VHF radio check
· Ensure all safety equipment, such as flares are within expiry dates
· Service your liferaft
· Replacing old batteries in a torch can make all the difference
· Don't forget to check the weather before you set out, keep within your capabilities.

The RNLI is currently producing a new safety booklet with a sea safety CD which will be available from May. The RNLI offers free impartial advice on all aspects of sea safety call 0800 328 0600. www.rnli.org.uk , www.rnliabersoch.co.uk
