Abersoch Lifeboat New Years Dip 2008:
(02/01/2008) Over a thousand spectators turned
out for the second Abersoch New Year's Day Dip to see at least
180 brave "dippers" rush into the cold sea to raise
money for the Abersoch RNLI Lifeboat. The fancy dress theme for
this year was Pantomime, the entrants were judged by King Neptune,
arriving on the Lifeboat to loud cheers as he waded ashore. The
costumes were magnificent; all should have been prize winners!
However the judges had to make difficult decisions and the prizes
were awarded to the following: Best Boy, (Ugly Sister): Thomas
Turtle of Abersoch; Best Girl, (Pocahontas): Alice Ward of Prestatyn,
Best Gentleman (Captain Hook): David Jackson of Bwlchtocyn, Best
Lady (Mother Christmas): Carol Nichols of Warrington and Best
Team (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs): the Whitehead family and
friends of Prestbury. Photographs of all the entrants can be seen
and downloaded from minxpix.co.uk at: http://john53.zenfolio.com/p1004699170/

The committee are grateful to local businesses
and friends of the RNLI who generously supported the event, including
Asda, Somerfield, The Co-Op, Harlech Foods, Gwynedd Disposables,
J & C Jones (Builders) and Will and Jane Williams for use
of the Beach Café. Heartfelt thanks also to the Abersoch
Lifeboat crew and support team and the Coastguards, all of who
gave up holiday time to ensure the event was safe. Thanks to the
generosity of participants and spectators the amount raised is
expected to better last year's sum of £5000.

Harrassment Of Dolphins:
(03/09/07) Sadly, there have been several reports this summer of powerboats
and jet skis harrassing the Bottlenose Dolphins that are resident
in the waters near Abersoch. We have been asked to point out that
this is now a criminal offence as the waters in Cardigan Bay are
now a Special Area of Conservation.
The SAC guidelines suggest the following:
- If dolphins come alongside your boat - keep a steady course
and speed up or slow down gradually as erratic manoeuvring and
starting and stopping the engine will disturb the animals.
- Do not try and swim with them. Its dangerous for you and potentially
stressful for the dolphins. Swimming with them is classed as harrassment
and is also a criminal offence.
- Do not try and feed them or make excessive noise.
- If you see dolphins - do not try and catch up with them but
reduce your speed so your vessel has no bow wave and get no closer
than 100m or steer away from them.

Wakestock News:
(23/07/07) Wakestock 2007, Europes
largest wakeboarding music festival had its Saturday night
schedule cancelled due to the severe weather conditions, however
the dedicated wakeboarders, who had travelled from all over the

huge enthusiastic crowd.
After the disappointment of finding out the
Saturday night music had been cancelled, packed crowds cheered
on some amazing wakeboarding from some of the best pros in Europe,
USA, South America and Australia. Winner of the mens title
this year was Brad Smeele, who pulled of some huge tricks. Second

event we regret we have had to cancel tonight's music festival.
The wakeboarding pro final will still take place at Pwllheli Marina
today between 12 and 3pm so it's still worth going down to the
marina - you do not need tickets to attend the wakeboarding.
Further information will be posted on the website and the office

Abersoch Lifeboat Rescues
Two: (13/06/07)
The Abersoch RNLI Lifeboat and Abersoch Coastguards was involved
in a rescue off Abersoch Main Beach, late on Tuesday afternoon.
They initially received reports of a jet ski in difficulties but
the Lifeboat soon found the craft near the moorings to be riderless.
Two young adults were spotted and pulled from the water shortly
after. The two casualties had fallen off the jet ski and then
had been unable to get back to it as it drifted off in the breezy
conditions. They attempted to swim ashore and even though they
were wearing buoyancy aids, they appeared to be struggling when
the Lifeboat reached them - as they were only in swimming gear
and were not wearing wetsuits. The numbing effects of the cold
water had taken its toll on one of the casualties and an ambulance
was called to provide medical assistance. An Abersoch Lifeboat
spokesperson said of the rescue, "This type of incident shows
just how important it is to wear the right equipment for each
particular water sport. Without the prompt assistance of the local
Coastguards and the quick launch of the Lifeboat, the two casualties
could well have been in a life threatening situation as there
was no other craft on the water to assist them - and even though
they were not that far from the beach!" www.rnliabersoch.co.uk/news

- Peninsula Ribs Round Anglesey
Record Attempt - Update: (06/02/07) Ian Greenwood of Peninsula
Ribs has set the benchmark for future round Anglesey attempts
with a time of 1 hr, 35 min, 10 seconds.
Here is Ian's account in his
own words...
" After a year of planning and
then 3 months of strong winds, we managed to set a GO date for
the Circumnavigation of Anglesey record for Sunday February 4th
2007.
We departed Beaumaris
Pier at 10:30 with two RYA timekeepers clocking us off. The BBC
had a film cameraman and the Daily Post had a stills photographer
onboard another RIB just off the start/finish line.
The run through
the Menai Straits was flat clam water and hardly any other craft
out. This allowed us 47 knots for the full length, even through
the Swellies. This was an experience!
After leaving the Straits at Caernarfon Bar we ran up the west
coast of the island. South Stack was clear and visible but as
we approached Holyhead the fog loomed ahead of us. The visibility
in these fog banks was good so we had no reduction in speed. Next
point was Skerries Lighthouse, this was turned and then the fun
began. All across the top of Anglesey was rough. Not the roughest
seas we get, but sufficient to slow us down to 37 knots. This
had an impact on the overall time. Once approaching Puffin Island
we could open up again and entered the Straits at W.O.T. The run
past Beaumaris Pier was great fun and a relief as my biggest concern
on the day was getting all the way round. What a waste of a year
of planning and all the spectators time if we didnt make
it.
So there it is!
1 hour, 35 minutes and 10 seconds (68nm distance travelled). It
is up there now for others to go for. Black Jack isnt the
fastest boat in the world, but this record isnt just about
speed. The planning is more important than putting the boat in
the water, so if you fancy a go, speak to HotRIBS.com as the trophy
they supplied is housed within the clubhouse of the Royal Anglesey
Yacht Club and they must be involved in all attempts to beat me
from the early stages.
I owe a huge debt
of gratitude to Kevin Goulding and Mike Deacon for the support,
publicity, sponsorship, help and advice they have given me. This
was my first record attempt, somehow I dont think it will
be my last."

- Abersoch RNLI New Year
Dip: (02/01/07) A crowd of over 500 people watched the first RNLI New Years
Day Dip on Abersoch Main Beach and over 80 braved the chilly wind
and freezing water to take part. The event raised over £2000
for the running of Abersoch RNLI Lifeboat station. The organisers
would like to say a big thank you to all who supported the event.
The Fancy Dress competition
winners were:
Best Boy: James Whitehead, Prestbury
Best Girl: Alex Morbury, Hale
Best Lady: Joan Timmins, Bwlch Tocyn
Best Gentleman: David Jackson, Nether Alderley.
By popular demand, this will almost certainly be the first of
an annual event!
