Cheeky Bardsey Seal. (02/09/2010)

Tony Bruce, who runs the very popular trips to Ynys Enlli / Bardsey Island has taken some great photos of a rather cheeky seal that likes to hang out on one of Tony's dinghies at Bardsey. The seal is proving to be very popular with the visitors to the island.

There are more photos at the BBC Wales website which you can view by clicking here...

Tony & Jayne Bruce have been running boats to Bardsey Island - Ynys Enlli - for over 16 years. The Highlander II sails from Pwllheli and Porth Meudwy, taking in some of the most stunning scenery the UK has to offer. The voyage from Pwllheli to Bardsey takes in the southern extremity of the Llŷn Peninsula ending at the historic Bardsey with its Abbey ruins, Bird Observatory and wide variety of flora & fauna. Teenagers Cut Off By The Tide. (31/08/2010)
John Wormald sent us this photo of the Abersoch Lifeboat rescuing 3 teenagers who had been cut off by the tide at Porth Ceiraid yesterday. Details of the rescue can be found at: http://www.rnliabersoch.co.uk/callout_files.htm

Cormorant Rescue. (31/08/2010)
Graeme Spencer sent in this photo and story of a recent encounter with a trapped cormorant...

"Myself and my friends son Oliver were making use of his brand new kayak, received for his 15th birthday present yesterday, by kayaking from The Warren beach to Pwllheli as part of a birthday adventure. The whole journey which was well planned took about 2 hours with wind and tide behind us (we caught a lift home with the Kayak on the roof of the car).

Along the way and about 1 hour in to our trip as we paddled along the stretch between Llanbedrog and Pwllheli, a part of the peninsular rarely frequented by holiday makers due to the lack of access and sandy beaches, where we came upon a cormorant somewhat in distress and adrift about 200 mts off shore caught up in some old fishing net.

We gathered a plan and drew up alongside the bird however, like all the best laid plans, ours also went adrift as before we knew it, we were like the bird, upside down in the sea. As we were wearing the correct flotation devices and the Kayak was well equipped we quickly found our footing and approached once more. I decided to stay in the water whilst Oliver stood-by alongside acting as my anchor.

With knife in hand - or mouth as the picture demonstrates, I took the bird gently in hand after a few well aimed pecks and after about 5 minutes (it seemed like 15), we managed to free the bird who promptly disappeared beneath the waves surfacing 100 mtrs downstream where he merrily went about his usual routine of catching fish.

We continued to Pwllheli our hearts pounding but with a feeling of fulfillment for what ended up being a wonderful adventure with a good story and photo to recall the same."

Baby Minke Whale Found on Llyn Beach. (23/08/2010)

Whales are sometimes spotted in the waters off our peninsula, however sadly, we sometimes see these and other sea mammals washed up on our beaches. In this case, a huge baby minke whale (over 20ft long) was washed up near Pwllheli. The Daily Post has a photo here and there is also coverage on the BBC News website.

Holiday Homes Targeted By New Government Tax Proposals. (12/08/2010)

Yet on 27 July, it announced its own measures to ensure that the tax benefits are not abused, by proposing a dramatic increase in the number of days a home must be let in order to qualify." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-10913365

If you have a dinghy on the beach, it might be worth keeping an eye on the tides next week as there some big ones on the way (eg a 5.4m on Wednesday evening!). At the moment there is no suggestion that they will be exaggerated by the weather conditions - but one to keep an eye on.

Dave Swimming For The RNLI. (05/08/2010)

Regular RNLI fundraiser, Dave Hursthouse, is taking part in this years Great North Swim. In September 2007, Dave had a serious accident whilst sailing his Laser Pico dinghy out at sea off Abersoch. The Abersoch RNLI crew went to his aid and since then he has been taking part in events to raise money for the station and took part in the 2008 and 2009 Great North Run. This year, he has decided to do something different and so, at 2.30pm on Saturday the 4th of September he will be swimming the Great North Swim at Lake Windermere. This should be quite a challenge for Dave as he is "not a great swimmer" and has had to teach himself front crawl for this open water challenge! Dave can be supported at his charity page at http://www.justgiving.com/daves-rnli-swim

and he also has a blog about the attempt here ... http://davehursthouse2010.blogspot.com/

First Wakeboard Park Opens In Wales. (19/07/2010)

Glasfryn Activity Parc near Pwllheli have opened the first wakeboarding park in Wales on one of their lakes using a Sesitec System 2.0 Cable tow system. The perfect conditions provided by the fresh-water lake, which is protected by mature trees, means that this is the ideal location to learn how to wakeboard without having to rely on a boat or waiting for perfect conditions at sea. The cable can be used whatever the weather and is the most accessible way to get into wakeboarding. 1 hour sessions are only £20 (which includes all equipment needed - wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet, board!) and children from the age of 8 are allowed. For experts, there is a kicker and the Relentless Leviathan rail, the very one that was used by the pro-riders in Wakestock 2010. For more info and booking details, visit their website at: http://www.glasfryn.co.uk/wakepark.htm

Main Beach Storm Surge. (16/07/2010)

Last night saw some severe weather conditions in Abersoch with far stronger winds than forecast with unconfirmed local reports of gusts up to 90mph and Aberdaron weather station recording 84mph. These winds were caused by a small area of low pressure that came closer to us than expected and also caused an exaggeration of an already big spring tide on the main beach. We have been talking about the big night time tides and their possible exaggeration in our forecasts each day since Monday, but the extremity of last nights tide was not expected and has done alot of damage to some boats on the main beach. More info and some photos here...

Wakestock kicked off on Friday with blue skies and sunshine and a very dry festival site, despite the heavy rain on Thursday night - in fact there was no hint of any mud and the rain had actually helped to keep the dust down on site, which had not seen any appreciable rain for quite some time. The Friday night crowds saw N Dubz and Eric Prydz and many many more plus action on the wakeskate / wakeboard pool gap from some of the worlds top riders. One highlight was the Plastic Thumbs in the inflatable Relentless music tent and bar. Today (Saturday) sees more action at Pwllheli Marina with the worlds top wakeboarders and music at the festival site from Maximo Park, Chase & Status, Plan B, Feeder, Tinie Tempah and many more. Warmer Water Visitors. (04/06/2010)

Natural history photographer Graham Eaton was out on and under the water off St. Tudwal's Islands this morning and captured these spectacular images. It appears, Graham says, that "the warm weather has started 'finally' to warm up the sea!. This has led
to a sudden invasion of compass jellyfish and spider crabs. It will be worth keeping a lookout for turtles at the moment!" Graham's website is well worth a visit at www.eatonnature.co.uk Its worth noting that compass jellyfish can inflict a nasty sting to unprotected skin.

Abersoch Cashpoint Controversy - Update. (17/05/2010)

Following on from the item below re. the Caernarfon & Denbigh Herald news story about the latest Abersoch cashpoint controversy, 2 of the people named in the newspaper article have emailed us some further information, which follows here...

"Dave and I are currently being entirely mis-represented, both in and out of the press and feel the need to set the record straight. So... We are not 'anti-cash point' (why would I be when I have a business in the village?).

We have objected to the relocation of the cash point to a position where we feel it could negatively impact on the disabled access to First Light, pavement users, road users and local residents more than it does in its current location.

Other people have objected too.

We did not go to the press.  In fact, the paper never even contacted us about the article, but paraphrased, out of context, pieces of our representations to the council.

Should you want to see our representations in full, they are available from the council, or you could even speak to us and we'll give you a copy."

Fishing & Boat Trips Return To Abersoch. (06/04/2010)

After a gap of a couple of seasons, fishing and sightseeing trips will run again from Abersoch Main Beach in the Jenny II fishing boat with "Fish'n'Trips...

Fish ‘n’ Trips, Abersoch, has been established to enable visitors to the Pen Llyn to experience the pleasure of observing and recording the abundant wildlife off Abersoch and St Tudwal’s Islands

Jenny II will be familiar to many visitors to the area, as will Phill Brown, the skipper, who has extensive experience of the marine environment in the bay.

Aware of the increasing need to promote a healthy approach to the conservation of the wildlife, Phill and his crew mate Miles Pickering have gained accreditation as part of the National Wildlife Safe Operators Scheme (WISE), this scheme ensures that the crew maximise the enjoyment for the customers and at the same time do not compromise the precious marine life which we are fortunate to have in this wonderful area.

Jenny II will operate this year from Spring Bank Holiday to early September offering a variety of cruises and fishing trips. On the fishing trips, conservation is to the fore and fishers are only allowed to harvest sufficient fish for their immediate needs.

Details of bookings and trips will be found at Present Thoughts, the gift shop opposite The Vaynol public house in the middle of Abersoch village.

From a deluge of emails that we have received, plenty of people are enjoying the new website - many thanks for your kind comments. We have had 2 emails re. problems reading text against the "sky" background. As mentioned on the home page, this site has been designed for viewing with recent browsers. If you are using IE6 (Internet Explorer 6) and earlier versions, then this site will not work. IE7 was launched in 2006, which makes IE6 ancient in terms of the internet (it was launched in 2001 !!!). IE6 is also full of security flaws, so if your machine is capable, downloading a more recent browser version would be sensible.

The Abersoch RNLI Fundraising Committee are grateful to local businesses including Harlech Foods, Gwynedd Disposables and ASDA plus friends and supporters of the RNLI who generously supported the event, including the many volunteers who gave time to help on the day. Thanks also to Willy and Jane Williams for use of the Beach Café and car parks and the South Caernarfon Yacht Club for offering free hot showers and soup to the dippers. Heartfelt thanks also to the Abersoch Lifeboat crew and support team and the Coastguards, all of whom gave up their holiday time to ensure the event was safe. Finally many thanks for the generosity of participants and spectators; the total raised will not be known until all the sponsorship monies have been submitted, but on the day the spectators gave a magnificent £3000 in the collecting boxes. All of money raised will be used to support the training of the crew.

Help For Heroes: (18/09/2009)
A spectacular coaching trip will arrive in Abersoch on 17th October in aid of the Help For Heroes appeal. There will be two teams of horses and two road coaches, the sort of thing you would have seen on the road in the 1800's. The route takes them from the West Midlands and over the Berwyns into Bala, then on to Maentwrog, then after a slight detour to sight see in Bedgelert, to Portmeirion, followed by Criccieth and finally Abersoch. The trip will take them five days, and they hope to raise money on route for Help for Heroes. Appropriately, one of the teams of horses is the "Household Cavalry Team" and some money will also be raised for the Household Cavalry Fund for their injured soldiers. Because of the nature of the Welsh countryside, the trip is quite challenging for a team of four horses and coach, as they have no disc brakes and it takes great skill to control them. The teams hope to arrive in Abersoch on Saturday 17th October, afternoon be tween 4 & 5p.m.
