News Round Up: Season 2001:
As another summer season is drawing to a close - here's a few reminders of what went on...Click on the links for pop up photos for a particular news item...

The season began with concerns over the Foot and Mouth epidemic with confirmed cases on Anglesey and the closure of Snowdonia National Park and all footpaths. Fortunately for our area, the disease did not stray over the Menai Straits and many restrictions were lifted in time for Easter. In fact the Easter holidays along with the bank holidays in May proved to be as busy in the village as ever.

In June the Jazz festival returned to the village and despite some problems over the licensing of the marquees, proved to be as successful as ever with top class acts performing over 3 days and a parade through the village. During that weekend, gorse fires broke out on Llanbedrog Head with concerns that some of them may have been started deliberately. The fires burned for 3 days and at one stage, firemen from all over North Wales battled to keep them from houses at the foot of the headland. Fortunately they were extinguished, though a fire at the same time gutted the Spinnaker chip shop in the village.

The weather during the early part of the summer was generally good though in July a northeasterly gale caused some problems to the moorings. Gusts of up to 50 knots meant that a couple of boats pulled their moorings and were beached.

Fortunately, the weather perked up in time for another highly successful O'Shea Wakestock (27th/28th July) - with top wakeboarders competing and 2 nights of musical entertainment - full report here.

August brought a mix of weather with unfortunately no prolonged settled spell - maybe next year?

It was also another busy year for SCYC with the dinghy, mirror and keelboat weeks as good as ever. The One Ton Cup was held in Pwllheli in early September - a highly prestigious event and a bonus for the Llyn. In mid September the European 1720 championships were hosted by SCYC with a big fleet and an even bigger beer consumption! For results for the year click here.
