Porth Ceiriad Beach Clean Up
A long term beach clean up scheme is being launched at Porth Ceiriad, this scheme has been set up and organised by Sustainable Abersoch Cynaladwy (SAC).

As we all know marine litter is an eyesore and it spoils the beauty of the sea and coastal zone and contaminating the beach, it has many other seen and unseen effects.

(((Marine litter is an environmental, economic and aesthetic problem, it travels over long distances on ocean currents and winds and is deposited on the beach. Marine litter kills and injures many marine mammals, birds, turtles, fish and even invertebrates. Entanglement, suffocation and starvation are the main direct threats to wildlife. Plastic is a particular problem as it is not readily degraded or processed by natural methods, it can persist for decades. The plastic is weathered and broken down (either by sunlight or ground down by the action of waves) into smaller and smaller particles, eventually becoming individual molecules of plastic still too tough for anything to digest. There is evidence that as these plastic molecules float around they accumulate poisons that have been manufactured, they act like a sponge for toxins that don’t dissolve in seawater. Small organisms consume these toxic plastic particles and these organisms in turn are eaten by fish or birds, so there is potential for these toxic chemicals to pass to the food chain)))

A bin compound for collected marine litter is being installed by the gate at the top of the steps at Porth Ceiriad. Beach users are being encouraged to take a bag along with them whenever they use the beach and to pick up marine litter that they come across, particularly plastic, and deposit it in this designated compound. The litter will then be collected and disposed of by Gwynedd Council.

The scheme is being launched on Saturday June the 23rd with a beach clean. We will be meeting at 11am at the top of the steps at Porth Ceiriad where there will be a brief chat about the scheme. Then we will head down the beach and pick up as much litter as possible! Please come along and help…..if you use the beach help us to keep it clean!
