Report of the Abersoch Jazz Festival 2007

Once again a top class brilliant hot and sunny weekend for the Abersoch Jazz Festival. Better than ever it is impossible to pick out one highlight, the wide variety of excellent music and range of extra activities offered something for everyone and for all ages. The street bunting was up, the shop windows brightly decorated and the incredible 160 poster from the local schools filled the walls in the Village Hall ready for the exhibition. The event started with a local band "Dr Jazz" and special guests playing to a packed audience in the Riverside Marquee, Friday afternoon the Gambit Jazzmen from Surry had brought Bria Skonberg and Claire McKenna, two wonderful very young professional jazz musicians from Canada and America, the Buskers started their tremendously hard working weekend outside the Vaynol Arms entertaining both passers by and customers and raising money for the Abersoch Playing Fields and the New Orleans Musicians Fund.

Freetime Old Dixie Jazzband

The two popular Dutch bands, Oriental and Freetimers were accompanied by a large 'fan club' of relatives and friends creating a great atmosphere. New to the Festival this year were the amazing and exciting Batala Samba Band from Barmouth, whose drumming 'surprised' and delighted audiences at the Riverside, the Village centre and on the beach where people danced in costumes, on boats and in the sea. At the same time Nigel Vaughan launched his replica James Bond amphibious Lotus and drove along in the sea. The Mardi Gras style Parade which started with a display of veteran Lotus cars was larger than ever led by the Band Marshals and three beautiful Lusitano horses. The display of decorated umbrellas and hats where much admired and must have taken a lot of creativity. Sunday commenced with the rousing Gospel Service led by Marcia Pendlebury in a packed chapel followed by another wonderful day of 'sun and sound'.

The children's workshop led by Huw Warren and the concert by the Gwynedd and Anglesey youth Jazz orchestra were very well supported with young performers, tutors and a good audience promising the future of live music is safe and in good hands. Well over 7000 people attended the event with many staying over the weekend and longer. Tickets were flying out and more were being printed on all three days! The Committee wish to thank everyone who supported the event and helped to make it such as success, the performers, funders, the local community and businesses. We all feel privileged to have had the opportunity of enjoying such talented and varied live music, we are now all looking forward to next year's Festival Thursday 12th June to Sunday 15th June 2008.
