November 17 2019 Daily Post Article On Winter In Abersoch... To put things into perspective, the 1980'as and first half of the 1990's were incredibly quiet in the village, with very few businesses open from October to Easter - so in relative terms, Abersoch has become much, much busier in winter in recent years. Of the relatively new businesses to open since 1995, West coast Surf was one of the first of the seasonal type businesses to open 12 months of the year. |

November 01 2019 SCYC Looking For An Office Manager Due to the fact that our Office Manager, Jude, is retiring next year after many years at the Club, which means that the South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club (SCYC) is looking to fill that position with a suitable candidate. The position requires a self-motivated and organized person who is confident in dealing with people, is customer focused, has the ability to self-manage and to use their initiative in day to day situations. Experience of office administrative duties, basic knowledge of accounting and computer literacy is essential, including knowledge of Excel as well as familiarity with social media. The ideal person for this role is someone who is able to be flexible in their working hours, with a willingness to adapt and respond to a busy working club and its members. Working in a spectacular location with a variety of responsibilities, it’s obviously pretty full-on during the peak season, but for the rest of the year offers a high degree of flexibility and a remuneration package comparable with anything else in the area. Candidates are invited to contact the Club, in confidence, on info@scyc.co.uk. |

July 24 2019 Scorchio Weather / Litter Issues Tuesday July 23rd saw some searing temperatures across the Llyn Peninsula, with over 30C recorded in Porthmadog, with Aberdaron seeing temperatures between 23C and 24C before a northerly sea breeze kicked in during the afternoon, allowing the cooler seas to influence the temperatures at the weather station site. The Abersoch and Pwllheli areas also reported temperatures close to 30C, which is just about as hot as it can possibly get in these locations.
The hot weather has coincided with the school holidays, which is wonderful to see, however, it has also brought some unwanted aspects. The photo opposite was posted to the Abersoch Beach Carers Facebook Group this morning, showing that a minority of people continue to be incredibly inconsiderate to their surroundings. Thanks to the dedication of the local voluntary litter pickers, who help keep the beaches clean.

July 20 2019 News Round Up...Another Gwynedd Council Own Goal? According to the Daily Post and other media outlets, planning officers have stated that 2 couples who want to build their own homes in Llanengan, should be refused permission as the homes would end up being worth too much!!! Councillors have so far rejected the planning officers recommendations though, according to the article in the Post, "Cllr Stephen Churchman described it as one of the “hardest decisions” he’d ever been faced with but said “with a heavy heart” he would have to refuse." The story can be read in more details on the Daily Post website and also on the Cambrian News website.
In other news, Bear Grylls' potential slipway on the island is being tweaked, so will need further approval from planners - more info here and a beach hut on the main beach in Abersoch has sold for £110,000 - see here. Kevin Bell has completed his paddleboard and walk from Abersoch to Poynton in Cheshire, raising thousands of pounds in charity for Cancer Research. He hopes to complete the sections on the peninsula which were missed out due to sea conditions, later in the summer. |

June 24 2019 Busy Day For Coastguard Teams & Local Lifeboat Crews Local coastguards, the coastguard SAR helicopter and the Abersoch Lifeboat were called out early this morning to join the search for a missing teenage girl, who was located in the water off Abersoch and taken to hospital by ambulance. During the morning, the coastguard rescue team (CRT) were called out again, this time to assist the Porth Dinllaen team with the recovery of dogs and their owners who had gone over cliffs, with no safe access. Porthdinllaen RNLI recovered a person stranded at the bottom the cliffs and the dogs, however, unfortunately and very sadly for all involved, one of the dogs had died from the fall. Remember, if you are caught up in any coastal emergency, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard, who then alert the local CRT and the local RNLI Lifeboat. |
June 13 2019 Charity Paddle Board To Poynton! Kevin Bell, who lives in Llanengan is embarking on Saturday on a 200 mile paddle board from Abersoch to Poynton in Cheshire in aid of Cancer Research. He'll be setting off on this arduous adventure on Saturday morning, leaving the Golf Slipway at 9.45am, where anybody can join him on the first leg just along the beach to Mickey's. The rest of day one will then see him attempting a difficult section round Bwlchtocyn, across Porth Ceiriad, around Cilan Headland and into Hell's Mouth. Thereafter, the journey will take him from Hell's Mouth to Aberdaron from Aberdaron, through the dangerous waters of Bardsey Sound, and into Porth Oer (Whistling Sands). Kevin will be accompanied by other paddlers and will continue up the coast and eventually across the mouth of the Dee estuary and onto the Bridgewater Canal at Runcorn. He will be posting a full daily itinerary and updates on his social media accounts: You can donate to a very worthy cause via one of our cash collections en route or via his JustGiving page:
For those unfamiliar with the waters once you leave the relatively sheltered bay of Abersoch, Kevin will undoubtedly face some very challenging waters on his first days, once he heads through the sound and towards Ceiriad and Cilan and on subsequent days towards Bardsey and beyond. This looks like a really, really difficult challenge... |

April 26 2019 News Round Up... Those who were lucky to have visited Abersoch for the Easter Weekend saw some sublime weather, with several days of consecutive warmth and sunshine, which would not have been out of place in the middle of summer. The still early morning's on the beach were a feature of this fine spell, with a glassy bay due to the lack of breeze. The main beach was as busy as a summer holiday day, as can be seen on the photo opposite, taken by John of www.totallyabersoch.co.uk. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and the last couple of days have seen a return of the rather more changeable weather, with a Met Office named storm, "Storm Hannah", set to bring some gales to the area overnight and into Saturday. This forecast has led to the cancellation of the "Roc" endurance triathlon event, that was due to commence on Saturday morning. Looking ahead and there is a new series of races which are set to take place on Sunday May 26th, starting from the Golf Club in Pwllheli and from the organisers of the Pen Llyn Ultras. The Pen Llyn Coastal & Trail Series consists of 3 race options, a 10K and Half and Full Marathon distances, with the Marathon taking the beautiful route along the coastal path from Abersoch and round to Porth Neigwl. These trail races are in response to the growing popularity of trail running, which is a subject we'll be returning to in the near future. For more info on the Pen Llyn Coastal Trail Series, visit: |
