Abersoch RNLI Sponsored New Year's Day Dip - Important Info

Abersoch RNLI and the Abersoch RNLI New Year’s Day Dip Committee would like to clarify that, as in all previous years, the 2014 Dip is organised totally by RNLI volunteers, has safety cover in the water provided by the local lifeboat crew and is covered by RNLI insurance.  All proceeds from the dippers’ sponsorship money and the collection boxes on the day go directly to Abersoch RNLI; no commercial organisation is involved in any way.
The Dip Committee is very grateful for the support of local businesses who donate the hot chocolate and mince pies to be given to all dippers and to our volunteers who man the collection buckets, the information tent and the café.
Can we encourage all dippers to raise sponsorship for the RNLI, using the sponsorship form which can be downloaded here or by collecting a form from one of the outlets in the village or from the information tent on the day, or using the Virgin Money Giving Abersoch RNLI Dip event page.

If you are spectating and enjoying the spectacle, will you please give generously to one of the official collectors who will be wearing RNLI yellow jackets and holding official RNLI collection buckets.
We are looking forward to seeing record numbers dipping in the sea and supporting on the beach.

Abersoch RNLI Sponsored New Year's Day Dip - Jan 1st 2014
Abersoch main beach will again be the place to be on New Year’s Day to get rid of your hangover by rushing into the sea for the annual Abersoch RNLI New Year’s Day dip.  This year the fancy dress theme is ‘Cartoon Characters’, and we are looking forward to seeing the usual imaginative interpretations of the theme.
Let’s make an heroic effort to raise as much money as possible for our wonderful lifeboat crew as all money raised will go directly to the Abersoch station to help with training and equipping the crew and supporting team members.  It is expected that if you join the dip you will raise some money for the crew, who will be on and in the water at the event to look after everybody’s safety, so to take part a sponsorship form is needed.

Charity Bike Ride From Cheadle Hulme To Abersoch

Marcus Wilby sent this news in of a recent charity bike ride...

"In order to raise money for Help For Heroes, 24 men of varying ages (14-58), and ability (all not ridden a bike in years!), got on their bikes and set off from Cheadle Hulme to Abersoch on a 158 mile trek.

All, thankfully,  made it in one piece, bar the odd scrape and puncture and legends were born. Craig 'Dastardly' Daniels, the supposed "El Supremo", sent us all the long way round whilst keeping a short cut to himself.
Stan Upton and Nick Muir completed the whole journey on a Tandem and Marcus Wilby, James Golden and Gary Smith, now forever known as the Conwy Tunnel Three after they rather stupidly rode through it as opposed to round it.
We have raised a real decent amount of money but you can never raise enough for a injured heroes so please find the link below to, if you wish, donate any spare pennies."  www.justgiving.com/Craig-Daniels5

Abersoch Hosts Its First Half Marathon

After huge demand, the team behind the Abersoch 10K have created a half marathon for Abersoch. All runners are encouraged to run for the races official and much loved charity the Welsh Air Ambulance.

Coconut Kitchen Sauces Award Success
The Coconut Kitchen based in Abersoch, Gwynedd is celebrating the news that its Pak Chong Hot Chilli Sauce has wowed judges in Great Taste 2013 by being awarded a Gold Star in the world’s largest and most rigorous food awards scheme involving over 400 judges and thousands of hours of blind tasting.

Paul Withington who runs The Coconut Kitchen restaurant and sauce production company with his wife Preechaya who is also the Head Chef commented, “We’re all really proud to have won an award in our first year of trading with our sauces. They only went on sale this January in Spar Pwllheli and we thought we should try and enter the competition as the sauces were selling really well. We are particularly pleased that the Pak Chong Hot Chilli Sauce won as this sauce was inspired by Preechaya’s Mum and we named it after her home town in Thailand. News of our win has also spread around Pak Chong too!
It appears that the award has started to open more doors already as Paul adds, “The award has certainly helped raise our profile and more orders have been coming in as a result. We have over 20 outlets in Abersoch, Pwllheli, throughout Wales and the borders selling our sauces at the moment. We hope to grow that number this year as we will be exhibiting as part of the Food & Drink Wales stand at The Speciality Food Fair at London’s Olympia on September 9th. So were busy busy at the moment trying to keep up with demand but its all good fun!”

More Hot Weather To Come?

It is no exaggeration to say that it has been a rather incredible week of summer weather here in Abersoch with very warm or hot temperatures and strong sunshine. This morning, the latest weather charts from 2 of the main global computer models (GFS & ECMWF) are both showing that, after a moderation in temperatures for Sunday / Monday, the heatwave type conditions may return from Tuesday or Wednesday onwards and last through the weekend of the 20th / 21st July, which is the start of the school holidays for most. The snapshot of the chart to the left is the ECMWF one for Sunday 21st July and if that becomes reality, temperatures in the high 20's C will be expected on the coast and above 30C inland. Our daily weather forecast will be keeping a very close eye on this, to see if these extended outlook charts actually do become reality.

The fine weather looks like it could last for another week at least, with temperatures coming down a bit, but still loads better than we have seen at this time of year for the last few summers, which is great news for this weekend's Wakestock Festival that starts on Friday.

The daily weather forecast will be keeping an eye on the extended outlook for the start of the main school holidays.

Best July Weather Since 2006 On Its Way!

A potentially memorable spell of weather is on its way to our shores!

The real warmth looks like arriving on Sunday, but Friday and Saturday should be mostly sunny and warm too. The weather outlook charts are by far the best for our area in July since 2006. Temperatures may well be up to the mid 20's C during next week and the charts continue to show a fine and very warm Wakestock Festival weekend.

Our daily weather forecast will be keeping a close eye on how long this potentially wondeful spell of beach weather will last.

Warm Weather Brings Sightings of Dolphins

The spell of fantastic weather that we have been enjoying here in Abersoch since the start of June has led to many sightings of Bottlenose Dolphins in our area of Cardigan Bay. John Wormald of www.totallyabersoch.co.uk captured this fantastic image of a dolphin yesterday, that had decided to come quite close to the boat. If you are lucky enough to be in a boat when these amazing creatures decide to come close to you, there are a few simple rules that apply in Cardigan Bay, as part of a "Marine Code". These include:
- slow down gradually to minimum speed & avoid sudden changes in speed or course.
- do not steer towards them or approach within 100m (do not chase them!)
- do not attempt to feed, touch or swim with them & avoid loud noises.
- take extra care to avoid disturbing animals with their young.
All the above apply to seals & porpoises too and seals should not be approached on the shore and sea caves should be avoided during the seal pupping season of August to October.

The incident involved great danger to those attempting the rescue and resulted in a lifeboat crewmember being washed off the rocks by large waves. The skill and bravery of the crew of the lifeboat and the RAF Sea King helicopter which was also involved, saved lives in this incident. The story is best told by those who were involved, along with some spectacular photos captured by the helmet camera on board the lifeboat. Click here to read the story.

Abersoch To Be Listed In Top 10 Places To Live In Wales

The Wales Online website is reporting that Abersoch is going to be listed in the top 10 places to live in Wales in the next edition of the Sunday Times.
Wales Online report that, "The league table will form part of a comprehensive guide published by the Sunday Times this weekend, and also includes, in no particular order: Abersoch, Anglesey, Cardigan, Cowbridge, Crickhowell, Lisvane in Cardiff, Laugharne and Narberth."

The Abersoch area is a spectacular place to live with an almost unique mix of landscapes including mountains, beaches, bays and islands. Further Update On The Parking Issue

Update to the item below.
One of the main points to arise from yesterday evening's meeting was that the Golf Club will be able to set virtually all the tariffs, timings and tolerances and will be able to react to issues arising. For example, you will not be "fined" if you enter the car park and then leave again straight away or if the car park is full. Another point is that the tariffs shown in the planning application are just examples and are not the ones likely to be used.

Finally, in response to concerns regarding appealing an unfair "fine", you will be able to appeal to the golf club, as well as Parking Eye, so that if the "fine" is found to be unfair, then the golf club have the power to cancel it.
We will update again when further info on the tariffs etc becomes available.

Some Concerns Addressed By Golf Club

Some positive news tonight on the Golf Beach Car Park issue.
A meeting of Abersoch Traders at the Vaynol this evening heard from representatives from the golf club, who have suggested that the car park will be run as fairly as possible and details such as tariffs and tolerances have yet to be decided and will be made public at some point after their AGM.
Concerns were raised by traders over the company that will be running the car park and their methods of debt collection, but the golf representatives wish it to be known that they will have a good level of control over what goes on and will be able to react proactively when issues arise.
Updates will be posted to this story when more information is received.

Parking Eye Ltd Golf Club Cat Park Update:
Please note that the title of this item and some text below have been edited following information given at a meeting on 12/3/13, that have addressed various concerns (see updates above).

Abersoch Golf Club have invited a private company to run their beach car park, using a car registration number plate camera system. The company that has been invited to manage the car park, ParkingEye Ltd, make their money by sending out demands for large sums of money (£100 according to the application), for minor parking transgressions, sometimes leading to demands from a debt collection company.

If you are concerned by this proposal, you can comment on Parking Eye Ltd's 2 planning applications at the following 2 links:

Dog Exclusion Proposals Formally Dropped

Readers of this website will remember the recent controversy over proposals by Gwynedd Council to ban dogs from most of Abersoch's beaches. The proposals were then put to the public in the form of a consultation, which turned into a farce as some of the information given to the public was incorrect. The council then backtracked and produced a further consultation with a proposal to leave things pretty much as they are. Finally, this week, the Gwynedd Council Cabinet has met and agreed to keep things as they are in Abersoch with the current zones in the harbour and the SCYC to Golf Slipway main beach zone, to be enforced between 1st April and 30th September.
